Dentists Administering Botox Treatments

By Erin O'breen

There are different reasons that people may wish to have Botox injections administered by a trained professional, sometimes it's for medical issues, and other times it's simply to enhance the appearance of the patient. Those who are certified to administer Botox are specially trained to do so, as there are strict rules when it comes to who has the qualifications to administer it, and generally a physician is recommended to deliver it. Of course, other trained personnel such as nurses can also inject botox but in the presence of a trained physician.

Inquiries have been made as of late about botox injections that are prescribed and delivered by a dentist. There can be a number of factors that play a role in deciding this, including state laws and guidelines.

Let's take a look at this a bit further.

What concerns are involved?

All medical professionals who administer botox treatments must receive the specialized training, including dentists. While these treatments are not extremely complicated like some procedures such as brain surgery, an elaborate knowledge of the anatomy is essential to deliver the injections safely and effectively. With injections such as these, there are sometimes side effects, and they can only be properly dealt with by a highly trained expert.

Basically, when the necessary training is completed a dentist should be approved for botox injection treatments and of course, prescribing the treatments. .

Dentists performing botox treatments

The prescription and administration of botox treatments are allowed by dentists in the majority of the United States. However, the indications for injecting botox are different to regular cosmetic injections. A dental plan in the state of California would permit a dentist to treat myofascial conditions with botox, the Dental Board of California certifies this. The use of botox for cosmetic reasons by dentists however is illegal. The Facial Cosmetic Surgery Permit is the authority who regulates this kind of treatment. Botox injection procedures in Georgia require that facial anatomy and specific methods be learned in a 21 hour long course that the board has approved.

Botox treatments for cosmetic reasons have lately been allowed by the Massachusetts Board of Dentistry, for those who have had the intensive training required for these injections.

It is evident that rules are different between states, and it is always worthwhile checking whether it is okay as a dentist to inject botox in patients. But overall, it appears that there is a growing trend of approving dentists to now inject botox for cosmetic purposes.

The arguments in question

Some debate is happening presently for and against dentists being approved to cosmetically treat patients using botox injections. There are those who feel that dentists do not have the same level of knowledge of facial anatomy as plastic surgeons have, and talk is happening on medical forums about this topic. Some state boards recommendations are partly in line with this, that dentists should only perform botox treatments for purposes related to dentistry.

Not surprisingly, if you were to ask a dentist, they would say that they are qualified to deliver botox injections due to their specialized training in maxillofacial and facial anatomy, making them more than qualified. At this time, it looks like it will be years before this debate is finished.

Conclusion

Botox injections are becoming ever more popular with the demand exceeding the number of personnel able to administer the drug. The restrictions by state boards for delivering botox are being updated all the time, and dentists are now being sought out to perform the injections.
